United Nations, Mar 10.- The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 30 years after its implementation, will be the focus of the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) which begins today.
The meeting, which will run until March 21 at UN headquarters in New York, will evaluate the progress of the Declaration, which remains the most revolutionary roadmap regarding gender equality.
This is, precisely, the largest annual meeting of the multilateral organization dedicated to this issue and to the empowerment of women.
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was adopted in 1995 by the governments participating in the Fourth World Conference on Women.
According to UN Women, progress is possible, but it has been too slow, uneven and fragile. Every 10 minutes, a woman is murdered by someone in her own family.
If things continue as they are, a girl born today will be 39 years old before women hold the same number of seats in Parliament as men, it said.
The gender gap in labour force participation has remained stagnant for 20 years. In 2022, the organisation added, the proportion of women killed in war contexts doubled in the course of a single year.
On the other hand, emerging technologies promise equality, but are used as a weapon against women and girls, who are also the most affected by the worsening climate crisis. During CSW69, governments, civil society organisations, specialists and activists from around the world will outline strategies and agree on actions, policies and investments in favour of gender equality.
