USA, March 14. - At least 33 thousand migrants have been detained so far in the United States by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) since President Donald Trump took office more than 50 days ago.
The figure nearly exceeds the number of arrests in the interior of the country in the last fiscal year under former President Joe Biden, according to senior Department of Homeland Security officials.
ICE is redoubling its efforts in the face of pressure from the current administration to increase detentions of undocumented immigrants in the United States.
Agency officials have already warned that they are dealing with detention space “on the limit.”
When he was sworn in on January 20, Trump reiterated that he would carry out the largest mass deportations in history and implemented executive orders such as declaring a national emergency on the southern border, increasing the number of National Guard troops on the border with Mexico, as well as repealing asylum programs adopted by Biden, such as the CBP One application.
However, on March 10, the Republican administration announced the launch of a new mobile application for migrants in an irregular situation who want to leave the country "voluntarily."
CBP Home replaced CBP One, which facilitated foreign migrants' legal access to asylum.
This Thursday, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court in a series of emergency appeals to allow it to move forward with plans to end birthright citizenship, a measure that is unconstitutional, sued, and blocked in the courts. (Text and Photo: Cubasí)
