Mexico and the United States address security cooperation gains

Mexico City, Mar 29th. - Authorities of Mexico and the United States discussed progress in binational cooperation in migration and security on principles such as respect for sovereignty and coordination without subordination.

A statement from the Foreign Ministry says that in the ongoing dialogue between the two countries, President Claudia Sheinbaum received at the National Palace the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem.

"Both delegations discussed progress in binational cooperation in migration and security, on the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, respect for sovereignty, coordination without subordination and respect for human rights," he said.

According to the text, the head of the executive highlighted the contributions of the millions of Mexicans living in the United States.

Such statements come at a time marked by the aggressive and questionable policy in the immigration field of President Donald Trump's administration and threats of mass deportations.

The statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentions that Noem reaffirmed that the United States respects Mexico's sovereignty.

After the meeting, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente and the visitor ratified the validity of the memorandum of understanding signed in 2022 between the National Customs Agency of Mexico and Customs and Protection of the United States Border.

Sheinbaum was also accompanied by the secretaries of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García, as well as the Undersecretary of Human Rights, Population and Migration of the Interior, Arturo Medina, among others.

The U.S. government was attended by Department of Homeland Security adviser Corey Lewandowski.

After the meeting with Noem, who arrived in the afternoon to this nation after visiting El Salvador and Colombia, the ruler said that she held a fruitful meeting with the secretary for the benefit of both nations.

Our countries have a good relationship in the framework of respect for sovereignty, he added through a message on social network X.

On the issue of security, one of those analyzed, Mexico has left evidence of its commitment, as the authorities arrested 15 thousand 887 people for high-impact crimes and seized 134.7 tons of drugs, between October 1, the beginning of the current administration, and on March 23.

The results are eloquent and point to the questioning of Trump, who has used as one of his justifications to impose tariffs on this country the supposed fact that he does not do enough in the fight against drug trafficking. (Text and photo: PL)
