Japan urges the United States to reconsider all tariff measures

Tokyo, April 10 – The Japanese government urged its U.S. counterpart to review all newly implemented tariff measures, in addition to the supplementary customs taxes it paused for 90 days.

The Executive positively received the announcement of the temporary suspension of the latter and expressed great concern about these levies, as well as others that came into force before.

Since early March, President Donald Trump's administration began applying a 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports.

Another severe blow to the Japanese economy was the implementation of an additional 25 percent tariff on automobile imports from Japanese companies, a key economic sector that accounts for nearly 30 percent of this country's exports to the United States.

Trump announced this measure weeks after imposing a new 25 percent tax on cars manufactured outside the United States, so the new rate for vehicles imported from Japan was added to the levies then in force.

We continue to strongly call for the United States to review its measures related to its reciprocal tariffs, the steel and aluminum tariffs, and the tariffs on vehicles and automotive parts, stressed Japanese government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi.

As the North American government declared the previous week, Japan had to pay tariffs of 24 percent on products imported to the United States.

After the pause announced by Trump, the customs tax will be reduced to the universal 10 percent decreed by the White House, however, other tariffs remain in place and will continue to hit the Japanese economy.

The tariffs affect tens of nations and territories, and their effects have been reflected in global economic movements in recent weeks. (Text and photo: PL)
