
Havana, May 26 – Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez will lead a posthumous tribute today to distinguished Cuban diplomat Abelardo Moreno Fernández, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
Moreno Fernández, recognized as one of the most illustrious figures in Cuban diplomacy, died in this capital at the age of 80 on April 19, while still serving as an advisor to the Foreign Minister.
Abelardo, as his colleagues called him, began his work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1961 and had a meritorious career that led him to hold several responsibilities in domestic and foreign services, until he was appointed deputy minister (2000-2019).
He served on permanent missions in Cuba's representations to international organizations based in Geneva and to the United Nations in New York, serving as Ambassador and Permanent Representative there.
He represented his country at numerous international meetings and led complex negotiation processes, for which he was recognized and respected by his colleagues and peers around the world.
His contributions include the contribution to the success of the XIV Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in 2006 and the II Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States in 2014.
He also contributed to Cuba's presidencies of these important mechanisms, which contributed to the international projection of this Caribbean nation and its leadership at the global and regional levels.
Abelardo Moreno Fernández was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Raúl Roa García Higher Institute of International Relations, of which he was a guest professor.
He published books and articles on several topics, including "International Negotiation: The Art and Science of the Negotiation Process" (2021) and "The Non-Aligned Movement: Foundations, History, and Identity. Cuban Vision, 2023." (Text and photo: PL)
