May 31 is World No Tobacco Day, a day to raise awareness about the dangers of cigarette smoking and promote healthy lifestyles.
In Cuba, this day takes on special significance, as the country has implemented a series of educational campaigns aimed at preventing the onset of smoking, especially among adolescents.
Education and awareness are essential to curbing this scourge that affects the health of millions of people and has a negative impact on society.
From an early age, Cuban schools educate students about the disadvantages of smoking, including the increased risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and several types of cancer.
Prevention among young people is a priority, as smoking often begins in adolescence, influenced by social and cultural factors. Programs and workshops motivate students to adopt healthy habits and to reject cigarettes as a symbol of maturity or social integration.
It is also important to highlight the problem of passive smokers, who, without actively smoking, are exposed to the same harmful substances.
Exposure to ambient smoke harms the health of children, pregnant women and adults by increasing the likelihood of developing respiratory and heart disease.
Therefore, in Cuba, there is a call to put a stop to this phenomenon, promoting a culture of respect and protection for those who do not smoke.
World No Tobacco Day invites us to reflect and act against this invisible enemy; it is everyone's responsibility to contribute to a smoke-free society.
The fight against smoking requires a joint effort between governments, educational institutions, health organizations, and the community at large. Only in this way can we guarantee a healthier future for new generations and put an end to this silent epidemic that puts the lives of millions of people around the world at risk.
