Guáimaro, Camagüey, June 5th. - Reforestation is a national priority, reason enough to strengthen forestry capacity and preserve the forest heritage of the easternmost region of Camagüey.
The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), in collaboration with other agencies, promotes environmental education and the prevention of indiscriminate logging to protect soils, watersheds, and forests.
Guáimaro currently has several endangered tree species, including the Carbonero and Royal Ebony, the Cork Palm, the Cúrbana, the Manajú, the Acacia, the Mantequero Cashew, the Malangüero Firefly, and the Majagüilla.
Two key elevations stand out in Guaimaro's landscape: La Deseada and El Jacinto hills. These fragile ecosystems face indiscriminate burning and logging each year, which compromises the protection of their flora and fauna.
To preserve the ecological environment in these areas, characterized by the presence of majus, carob, eucalyptus, and fruit trees such as anoncillo and mango, it is important to work in three key areas: habitat, forest management, and a management plan, aimed at regenerating vegetation and strengthening endemic fauna.
One of the projects promoted by CITMA in the municipality seeks to increase the presence of the Guáimaro tree, with the goal of rescuing this species in the district's plains. (Radio Guáimaro) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
