Cuba reaffirms commitment to combat desertification and drought

Havana, June 17 – Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez reaffirmed his country's commitment to soil protection, reforestation, and sustainable agriculture, on the occasion of today's World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.

In his account of X, the Foreign Minister noted that 40 percent of the world's land surface is degraded by irrational and unsustainable levels of production and consumption.

Desertification is the result of ongoing soil degradation, caused by constant deforestation of forests, salinization, lack of water, and overexploitation of aquifers, generally caused by excessive human economic activity, according to experts.

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared the date with the aim of promoting public awareness about these issues, which have a detrimental impact on the environment. (PL) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
