Who would have said more than 60 years ago, when the powerful neighbor to the north imposed the siege on the small island, that in the XXI century Amalia, Abel, Emily, Diego, Valeria, Ariel and so many Cuban girls and boys would have a law recognizing their rights, duties, guarantees and establish principles for their full development in present and future life.
It is Cuba, despite the economic siege and constant manipulation, which only appears criticized and vilified in the mainstream media, that has the luxury of passing an innovative, intense, and robust law, which has gone through 17 versions and in which opinions from the most renowned academics to the kindergarten teacher, and children from every corner of the country, have been reflected.
A fully Cuban product recognized by international organizations as a reference for the region, after a multi-sector group and five study centers were perfecting and seeking consensus, it arrived at the National Assembly of People's Power in its X Legislature as a document of 124 revolutionary articles.
Based on the precedent of Decree-Law 16 of 1978, the Children and Youth Code, this new law adapts to current times and recognizes in its effects people from birth until they reach 18 years of age.
These children, Amalia, Abel, Emily, Diego, Valeria, Ariel and others will transit from now until they reach the age of 18 years with rights and duties, protected by a law that respects their development, which protects them from contemporary phenomena, wars, abuse, child labor, sexual abuse...
For more than two years, opinions were channeled, opinions were listened to with humility, and in no case was a single party ignored on the most acute and sensitive issues.
The Code refers to equity and social justice, integrality in the protection of rights, social participation and other points; respect, progressive autonomy and responsibility appear as clear terms that there is the will to improve the rights of these age groups, future of the nation.
The first book of the transformative document states: Equity and Social Justice. Girls, boys, adolescents, and young people have the same opportunities for development and well-being in accordance with their potential, which may require differentiated attention in specific situations in order to achieve equal enjoyment of rights.
Guarantee! Love! Will! Rights! are synonymous with this Code; Cuba once again offers lessons in human rights. Those who want to see, let them see; those who don't, let them remain silent; but Amalia, Abel, Emily, Diego, Valeria, Ariel, with their different ages, with their different personalities, with their dreams and joys, will advance along the right path, under this inclusive, equitable, and humane Law.
