USA, Donald Trump, police, control

Trump threatens to take control of police in several U.S. cities

Washington, August 12.- Several U.S. cities are currently in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump after deciding to take control of the police in the capital and deploy the National Guard under the pretext of combating crime.

Baltimore, Oakland, New York, and Chicago now appear as possible future targets for the Republican after suggesting that what was planned for Washington, DC, could serve as a model for other cities in the country.

In his announcement during a press conference at the White House yesterday, Trump stated that other cities are observing this and that he hopes it will allow them to "clean themselves up".

The President insists on the precariousness of the situation that led him to declare a public safety emergency in the District of Columbia, despite crime rates in the capital being at their lowest in 30 years, according to official data.

However, some local media suggest that none of that matters; Trump aims to turn the United States into a police state.

A leaked memo from the Department of Homeland Security reveals that the military is no longer the last resort in the U.S. government. Now, it is the first tool. A central actor. A political weapon, highlighted an article from Common Dreams.

Shortly after Trump's conference, Representative Mary Gay Scanlon (Democrat from Pennsylvania) condemned the president's takeover of law enforcement in D.C., calling it an abuse of power.

Meanwhile, the mayor of the capital, Muriel Bowser, described Trump's measure as disturbing and unprecedented. "I've said this before, and I'll say it again, I think the president's view of Washington DC is influenced by his experience in the COVID-19 era during his first term", she emphasized.

In recent days, the White House had increased the deployment of federal law enforcement in the District of Columbia as part of the fight against crime, and agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the FBI, the Secret Service, and other agencies were on the ground.

Before meeting with journalists, the president wrote on social media: “Washington, D.C. will be LIBERATED today! Crime, barbarism, filth, and scum WILL DISAPPEAR… I quickly cleaned up the border (ZERO ILLEGAL crossings in the last 3 months!), D.C. is next!!!”

As signs of discontent began to surface, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of the capital to express their rejection of Trump's attempt to federalize the DC police force and deploy 800 members of the National Guard. (Text and photo: PL)
