
Havana, October 24. - Tropical Storm Melissa remained nearly stationary in the Caribbean Sea during the early morning hours of this Friday, with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour and higher gusts, reported the Forecasting Center of the Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) in its Tropical Cyclone Advisory No. 7.
At 6:00 a.m., the center of the system was located at 16 degrees North latitude and 75.5 degrees West longitude, about 260 kilometers south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, with a central pressure of 1001 hectoPascals, the institution specified.
According to Insmet, the system will continue with slow movement in the coming hours, approaching Jamaica and the seas south of Cuba, with forecasts of gradual strengthening and possible rapid intensification during the weekend.
The Forecasting Center emphasized that, due to its current position, the time of year, and the high temperatures of the Caribbean Sea, close monitoring of Melissa's evolution and trajectory continues, considered a potential danger to the region.
Cuba's Civil Defense recalled the importance of implementing preventive measures such as evacuating solid waste, cleaning sewers and waterways, stockpiling food, protecting vulnerable people, and preparing shelter centers.
The institution also insisted that the population should stay informed through national and provincial official media, as well as institutional accounts on social networks, and avoid paying attention to rumors.
The next tropical cyclone advisory on Melissa will be issued at 6:00 p.m. this Friday, according to Insmet.

At 6:00 a.m., its central region was estimated at 16.0 degrees North latitude and 75.5 degrees West longitude, a position placing it about 260 kilometers south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.
