Civil Defense decrees cyclonic alarm in eastern provinces and Camagüey


Havana, Oct. 27th - The National Civil Defense General Staff today decreed at 09:00 hours the Cyclonic Alarm Phase for the provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Granma, Las Tunas and Camagüey, before the imminent impact of Hurricane Melissa, as specified in official note No. 3 from the institution itself.

According to the Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology, Melissa increased its intensity to reach maximum sustained winds of 260 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts and a central pressure of 917 hectopascals, which turned it into a category five hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

The cyclonic organism moved on a course close to the west at six kilometers per hour and in the next 24 hours it is expected to turn north and northeast, transiting through the seas of Jamaica and approaching the south of the eastern region of Cuba.

The Civil Defense arranged the Cyclonic Alert Phase for Ciego de Ávila and Sancti Spíritus, while in Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Matanzas, Mayabeque, Havana, Artemisa, Pinar del Río and the Special Municipality Isla de la Juventud it was instructed to activate the defense councils in reduced composition.

The authorities urged the population to stay informed through national media and official profiles on social networks, and to comply disciplinedly with the indications of the Civil Defense and local government bodies.

The National Civil Defense General Staff, together with the Institute of Meteorology and the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, maintains permanent surveillance on the evolution of Hurricane Melissa.

FROM THE NATIONAL CIVIL DEFENSE GENERAL STAFF ON HURRICANE MELISSA

October 27, 2025, 07:00 hours

According to the information from the Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology, Hurricane Melissa has continued to gain in intensity, reaching maximum sustained winds of 260 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts and its central pressure decreased to 917 hectopascals, so it became a category five hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. It moves with a course close to the west and at a speed of six kilometers per hour.

In the next 24 hours, it is expected to continue its movement to the west and turn to the north and northeast to transit through the seas of Jamaica, approaching the national territory on Tuesday through the south of the eastern region of Cuba, where meteorological conditions will gradually deteriorate.

Taking into account the above, it was decided to move as of 09:00 hours today, to the CYCLONIC ALARM Phase the provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Granma, Las Tunas and Camagüey; to the CYCLONIC ALERT Phase, Ciego de Ávila and Sancti Spíritus.

The provinces of Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Matanzas, Mayabeque, Havana, Artemisa, Pinar del Río, and the Special Municipality Isla de la Juventud, activate the defense councils in reduced composition.

The population is oriented to stay informed about the development of this system, through national media and official profiles of social networks and comply disciplinedly with the indications given by local authorities and the Civil Defense.

The National Civil Defense General Staff and the Institutes of Meteorology and National of Hydraulic Resources, maintain surveillance on this cyclonic organism.
