Havana, Nov 24 - Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, highlighted today that his country is not alone in its demand for an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed over six decades ago by the United States.
On X, the foreign minister recalled that 33 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution calling for an end to Washington's hostile policy was approved for the first time.
"Since that date, the US government, disrespecting and ignoring the will of the overwhelming majority of the international community, has remained isolated in its capricious will to maintain the asphyxiation and economic war against the Cuban people," he stated.
Likewise, in his message, Rodríguez Parrilla emphasized that the northern nation has intensified its unilateral coercive measures with a marked extraterritorial character.
This year, despite a campaign of pressures by the United States Government, Cuba received the support of the majority of countries at the UNGA, for the thirty-third consecutive time, in its struggle to end the blockade.
With 165 countries in favor, 12 abstentions and seven against, the international community approved the island's draft Resolution, which states that between March 2024 and February 2025, the damages caused by the blockade exceeded seven thousand 500 million dollars (USD).
After a visit to Cuba to verify the impact of this US policy, the United Nations Human Rights Council's Special Rapporteur, Alena Douhan, stated that the coercive measures affect all spheres of national life and directly harm its inhabitants, especially the most vulnerable groups.
"Such measures limit the State's capacity to develop public policies, violate the rights to food and a dignified life, hinder academic exchanges, affect the energy supply, the supply of drinking water, medicines, and violate the right to life in general," Douhan pointed out in statements to the press.
