Cuban President recalls Granma Yacht's arrival

Havana, Dec. 2 - President Miguel Díaz-Canel today commemorated the arrival of the Granma yacht on Cuban shores 69 years ago, a foundational event of the Cuban Revolution.

In a message posted on social media, the president recalled that “at dawn, the Granma expeditionaries arrived and entered the homeland,” thus fulfilling the promise of historical leader Fidel Castro: “free or martyrs.”

He emphasized that the landing on December 2, 1956, marked the founding of the Rebel Army and the resumption of the armed struggle for Cuba's definitive independence.

For his part, the President of the National Assembly of People's Power, Esteban Lazo, also commemorated the anniversary and sent “congratulations to the members of our glorious Revolutionary Armed Forces, genuine representatives of the #PeopleInUniform, a bulwark in the defense of the Homeland, the Revolution, and Socialism.”

Likewise, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero emphasized on social media that, in the face of current challenges, “the heroism and profound conviction of the Granma Yacht’s expeditionaries continue to inspire our resistance,” precisely at the moment when this historic anniversary is being commemorated.

On December 2, 1956, 82 expeditionaries, led by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, landed at Las Coloradas beach, in what is now Granma province, ready to be free or martyrs.

These young people arrived from Mexico and formed the core of the Rebel Army that fought against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista (1952-1959) in the Sierra Maestra mountains.

After the revolutionary triumph of January 1, 1959, the merger of the rebel forces with the workers', peasants', student, and university militias led to the creation of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), an organization established in October of that year as a Ministry and headed until 2008 by Army General Raúl Castro.

The FAR are composed of the four Army Corps: Western, Central, Eastern and Youth Labor Corps, and among their missions are not only the defense of this Caribbean nation, but also the contribution in several African countries to the processes of national liberation and the end of apartheid.
