Mexican and Cuban entities seek to boost scientific research

Mexico City, Dec 13.- The Mexican Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (Issste, for its acronym in Spanish) signed an agreement with Birmex and Biocubafarma to promote scientific research aimed at medication production.

The signing took place during the second ordinary session of the Issste's Scientific Council, led by the agency's Director General, Martí Batres, and aims to advance the production of vaccines and monoclonal drugs, a statement specified.

"We are very pleased that today we are signing this agreement with Birmex and Biocubafarma. (...) The goal is to generate medications and vaccines so that the Mexican State gradually depends less on transnational companies or imports," stated the Director.

He added that the aspiration is to provide, if not all—which is a long-term task—then at least a portion of the medications and vaccines demanded and needed by the people of this North American nation.

In this regard, Batres affirmed that Issste has contributed with various initiatives, such as the formation of the Scientific Council, the revitalization of its publishing imprint, as well as the opening of 40 positions dedicated to research.

For his part, the head of Laboratories of Biologicals and Reagents of Mexico (Birmex, for its acronym in Spanish), Carlos Alberto Ulloa, assured that the signing of the agreement is one of the first benefits obtained from coordination with Issste, public universities, and international institutions.

The president of the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Group of Cuba (Biocubafarma, for its acronym in Spanish), Mayda Mauri, celebrated the signing of this agreement, which will allow the company to share all of its experience in drug development.

“To convey to you the immense happiness we feel at this moment and the great pride that the Cuban and Mexican agencies are joining together in this purpose and making available to you all the best that Cuban science has to offer,” she stated. (Text and photo: PL)
