Russia to build a power plant on the moon by 2036

Moscow, Dec 26.- Russia has taken a significant step in long-term lunar exploration, after the corporations Roscosmos and NPO Lavochkin recently signed a government contract for the creation of a power plant on the Moon, scheduled for completion in 2036.

The project is part of the Russian Lunar Program and aims to guarantee a power supply for rovers, observatories, and the infrastructure of the International Scientific Lunar Station (ILRS), including facilities of foreign partners.

The contract, covering the period 2025-2036, establishes a series of fundamental stages for the materialization of the power plant. These include the development of spacecraft, ground and experimental tests, flight assessments, and finally, the deployment of the necessary infrastructure on the lunar surface.

According to Roscosmos, the project represents a significant step towards the creation of a permanent scientific lunar station and marks the transition from specific missions to a continuous lunar exploration program. In addition to the space agency, Rosatom and the Kurchatov Institute will also participate in the implementation of the power plant.

In 2014, the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, at the request of Roscosmos, developed a program to turn the Moon into a large-scale scientific laboratory. The project aims to conduct astronomical and geophysical research and envisages the installation of an optical observatory and an automatic radio telescope-interferometer, whose receivers would be distributed across the entire lunar surface.
