Sheinbaum demands "mutual respect" and "shared responsibility" from the US on security issues

Mexico, Jan 17. - From Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum firmly defended her country's security strategy this Friday, January 16, in response to criticism from the United States Department of State. The president emphasized that bilateral cooperation must be based on the principles of "mutual respect" and "shared responsibility," and rejected the notion that the burden of the crisis should fall solely on Mexico.

Sheinbaum was responding to Washington, which had labeled the progress at the border as "unacceptable." The head of state recalled that drug trafficking is a two-way phenomenon that cannot be resolved without decisive actions by the United States. In this regard, she urged the implementation of public health campaigns to reduce consumption and to halt money laundering on U.S. territory.

One of the critical points was the denunciation of the illegal arms trafficking to the south. Citing data from the United States Department of Justice, Sheinbaum revealed that 75% of the weapons seized in Mexico come from its northern neighbor. Likewise, she demanded that, just as Mexico seizes fentanyl, Washington must shut down the routes for rifles that fuel violence on Mexican soil.

The president presented results that, in her view, demonstrate the effectiveness of her policy, highlighting a 40% reduction in intentional homicides since October 2024. She also reported that fentanyl seizures at the border have led to a 50% decrease in the availability of this substance in the United States, which she described as "compelling" evidence of her government's commitment.

On the diplomatic front, she confirmed communication between Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Sheinbaum clarified that she has rejected any offer of direct intervention by foreign military or agencies in internal operations. Instead, the Government of Mexico prioritizes the exchange of information and technology, always under the control of national corporations.

She reiterated that the relationship with the Trump administration will be maintained through sovereign dialogue. Looking ahead to the upcoming meetings in Washington, Mexico will demand that shared responsibility translate into practical actions. National sovereignty, the president concluded, is not subject to negotiations or external pressures that ignore the root causes of this social crisis. (Text and Photo: TeleSur)
