Camagüey, July 14. – Air pollution is a real threat to health, which is why provincial authorities and the scientific sector have redoubled efforts in environmental monitoring and control to halt the deterioration of air quality.
To address this situation, the state inspection system has been strengthened, and work is underway to meet 55 environmental targets. These actions have led to improved indicators in the sustainable use of natural resources. Additionally, climate change adaptation projects based on natural and community-driven solutions are being promoted, with the aim of reducing the population’s vulnerability.
However, practices that jeopardize these advances still persist- for example, the burning of garbage, especially when it contains plastics or other synthetic materials that produce highly toxic substances. Although many people consider the smoke to be merely a passing nuisance, its effects can be much more severe, particularly in children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses.
Prolonged exposure to this toxic smoke can trigger asthma, bronchitis, allergies, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It has even been shown to increase the risk of respiratory infections and cardiovascular problems.
Cuban legislation, through Law 150/2022, prohibits the uncontrolled burning of solid waste. Nevertheless, shortages of resources and fuel have occasionally led to attempts to use this incorrect solution to eliminate trash accumulation, further aggravating the environmental problem.
Faced with this reality, prevention is the way forward. Reducing pollutant emissions, promoting cleaner energy sources, and completely avoiding open-air burning are urgent, non-negotiable steps.
Camagüey is moving in that direction with projects based on the circular economy and the proper management of urban solid waste. However, the challenge remains immense: ensuring cleaner air depends not only on institutions, but on the awareness and responsibility of every citizen.
