University of Camagüey leads AI research to solve real problems in the country

Camaguey, Apr 29th. - The implementation of the Strategy for the Development of Artificial Intelligence (IA), adopted almost a year ago in Cuba, becomes an essential tool for realizing the digital transformation of the country, necessary in the promotion of strategic socio-economic sectors.

In statements to the Cuban News Agency, Yailé Caballero Mota, director of the International Institute of Research in IA, created between the University of International Studies of Hebei, in the People's Republic of China, and her counterpart of Camagüey, highlighted the Cuban government's effort to achieve digital transformation and technological sovereignty, in line with its development nation programs.

In addition to the scientific visibility achieved by the research, some results have been obtained in the introduction of this type of technique in the solution of socio-economic problems, although in this direction it is still far from having a satisfactory state, said Caballero Mota.

The implementation of the strategy, he said, after being endorsed by the Council of Ministers on 29 May, is a challenge, as this means a cultural change that has not yet taken place, and the progress of the technological infrastructure must continue, to seek external financing paths, among other urgent actions.

On the other hand, it is urgent to ensure that the data policy, specifically its proper storage, structured data and accessibility, said the also Professor of the Head of the University of Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz, and leader of the AI Research Group of the aforementioned high-study center.

The use of AI, in the same way, has an impact on decision-making, providing various valuable tools, of which there is currently no clear perception in entrepreneurs and managers, therefore there must be greater alliance between universities, research centers and the business and non-state sector, with the aim of promoting software tailored to the needs of the different strategic branches, he abounded.

The current Cuban strategy, the expert explained, had its history in a project led by the University of Camaguey (UC), with the participation of several institutions and ministries, as part of the Sectoral Program Cuban Industry of software and computerization of society.

It was conceived in six fundamental axes, which are ethical and regulatory framework, Human Capital, Applications and Services, Public Administration, Science and Innovation and Social Communication.

Specifically at the Agramonte’s university, for more than 20 years, there has been the AI research group, where they have worked on the development of intelligent applications for the solution of real problems in various areas such as health, meteorology, civil engineering, biotechnology, neuropsychology, tourism, food production, education, efficient energy management, among others, argued Caballero Mota, president of the File of the Cuban Academy of Sciences (ACC) Camagüey-Ciego de Ávila.

It is opportune to highlight, she said, that these researchs have involved national institutions such as the Marta Abreu Central University of Las Villas, the Technological University of Havana José Antonio Echeverría, known as Cujae, the ACC and several hospitals.

The UC, the first university founded in Cuba after the triumph of the Revolution, has strong consolidated links through international projects with counterpart institutions in Belgium, Spain, China, Mexico, Brazil and the Dominican Republic.
