Washington, Aug 24.- Amid heightened security measures, Rudy Giuliani, a former New York mayor who served as a lawyer for Donald Trump, was indicted the day before along with other allies of the former US president in a Georgia jail.
Charged with illegally conspiring to reverse Trump's 2020 election defeat in Georgia, Giuliani is among 19 defendants in the case of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
The former Republican president (2017-2021) was indicted last week on 13 charges, including violation of state law against organized crime.
Trump is expected to turn himself in by the noon deadline Thursday at the county jail in Atlanta, Willis ordered all those involved in the impeachment.
The reports revealed that nine of the 19 defendants turned themselves in until the end of this Wednesday afternoon.
“The remaining 10 named in the indictment are expected to turn themselves in on Friday,” the county Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Giuliani was booked and later spoke to the press after being released on $150,000 bail.
According to his statements, the payment does not mean an admission of guilt and he opined that "this accusation is a farce."
Like his former boss, who will have to post $200,000 bail, Giuliani said the accusation was politically motivated.
The former Trump legal representative, who was once feared for using the RICO law to crack down on the mob, has now been indicted under the same statutes in Georgia for his alleged effort to reverse the results of the election nearly three years ago in that state in the southeast of the country.
For their part, former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows have tried to take their cases to federal court.
The Hill reported that the pair on Tuesday asked a judge to issue emergency warrants barring prosecutors from seeking their arrests if they were not delivered by the Aug. 25 deadline.
The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, abbreviated RICO, was a law originally intended against the mafia and other criminal gangs. (Text: PL) (Photo: Internet)
