General Debate Session of the United Nations General Assembly


Havana, Sep 19.- The General Assembly of the United Nations began today in the American city of New York the General Debate of its 78th period of sessions, in which the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, will intervene as the sixth speaker. also representing the Group of 77 and China.

In his opening address to the meeting, Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, urged world leaders to seek consensus to forge a future of peace and prosperity for the common good.

“The United Nations was created for times like this, of enormous danger and minimal agreements, and we have to use our tools in creative and flexible ways,” said the Secretary General.

He also urged drastic measures to be applied now regarding climate change, as well as to honor the commitments of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, on equal opportunities between men and women.

According to officials from the Cuban Foreign Ministry, it is foreseeable that during the General Debate, a large number of the high representatives of the 193 member states of the organization will express their countries' positions of rejection of the criminal blockade imposed by the government of the United States against the Greater Antilles.

Likewise, three other components can be identified that will be the subject of prioritized monitoring by the delegations, including that of Cuba: compliance with the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); confronting climate change, and international efforts in health.

The high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly, which will run until September 26 in New York City, includes the Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals (September 18 and 19), the Dialogue High-Level Meeting on Financing for Development (September 20), the Climate Ambition Summit (September 20), and the High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention and Response (September 20).

Other high-level events are also planned on various topics, such as universal health coverage, combating tuberculosis, and a Ministerial Preparatory Meeting for the Future Summit, which should pave the way towards the Future Summit, to be held at the United Nations in 2024.
