Cuba shows demonstrates experiences before the Interparliamentary Union

Luanda, Oct 25.- Universal health coverage in Cuba and the monitoring of care services by the deputies of the National Assembly were experiences shared with participants in the assembly of the Interparliamentary Union (UIP).

Representative Cristina Luna Morales, president of the Health and Sports Commission of the Cuban Parliament, presented the topic during the twenty-ninth meeting of the UIP Health Advisory Group.

She mentioned the work that the Caribbean nation carries out on the issue from the structure of the Assembly, since the deputies carry out different verifications of compliance with the right to health included in the country's Constitution.

The island has achieved universal coverage within its health system, not only in urban areas, but also in rural and difficult-to-access areas, he noted, and praised the family doctor and nurse program as the backbone of the Cuban health care scheme.

She added that it is a responsibility for parliamentarians to verify how things are going and to check how the people think about these services, their quality and the attention they receive from professionals.

Luna Morales commented that on the UIP stage, it draws a lot of attention to how Cuba, despite being an underdeveloped country and suffering the prolonged effects of the United States economic blockade, manages to maintain this universal coverage and make significant progress.

In this regard, we mention the will of the Cuban State to preserve the rights of citizens and in the midst of the shortcomings to defend precisely this first level of care, which is the gateway to the entire system.

The representative considered that it was a good opportunity to show the island's experience, but the IPU also reserved satisfaction for the delegation representing the Caribbean nation.

In this sense, he said that during the tour carried out the day before by Angolan health institutions, the participants in the IPU meeting arrived at a maternal and child hospital where the Cuban collaboration with that institution was recognized.

For us it was a great satisfaction, as it is a program that we prioritize in our country, and seeing the performance of our health collaborators there, about whom they have an excellent opinion as professionals and workers, filled us with pride, she confessed.

The effort has been worth it, she assured. The health indicators exhibited by Cuba, despite the intensified blockade and the economic crisis, are the answer to our tenacity to maintain our programs in the midst of difficulties, and collaborate with the rest of the world whenever they ask us for help, she concluded.
