Cuba a reference in Family Medicine

Havana, Nov 2.- Cuba continues to be an international reference in Family Medicine today, stated in this capital the president of the World Organization of Family Doctors, Patricia Bernal.

When speaking at the official opening of the Third National Congress of Family Medicine, Bernal highlighted the essential characteristics of this section in the health system of the largest of the Antilles, marked by its humanistic character.

The development of this section in Cuba is a benchmark, and proves how solidarity also contributes to the promotion of this specialty, commented the president of the Ibero-American Confederation of Family Medicine in the conclave that will take place until Friday at the Convention Palace.

Currently, Cuba supports this program with 451 polyclinics and 11,548 Family Doctor and Nurse Offices.

At this time, the repair of several properties is underway to restore their full vitality, while emergency and emergency services are being professionalized.

At the end of August, according to data from the Ministry of Public Health, eight million 206 thousand 211 consultations were carried out, 558 thousand 745 more than planned for the current year.

This branch already has 33 doctors in Science and 226 are in a doctoral plan, while there are 650 research projects underway.

Among the challenges are ensuring the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, improving the primary level of health and implementing a digital strategy.

The doctors and nurses who work in this section performed commendable work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They investigated day after day, admitted patients, and coordinated the entry to isolation centers and the anti-COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

These specialists work despite the limitations of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the Caribbean island for more than 60 years. (Text and photo: PL)
