Social Communication Law, a strategy for today’s Cuba (+ Post)

Camagüey, Nov 20.- The Social Communication Law, approved last May by the National Assembly of People’s Power, constitutes a comprehensive regulation that addresses these processes from an integrative vision, valued the Camagüey representative to Parliament, Daicar Saladrigas González.

Such reflection emerged during an exchange with members of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) in the province about the aforementioned text, as part of the improvement actions promoted in recent months by that organization, which recently held its 11th Congress.

She said that it is not a Press Law, which has to be read as a strength because the public media system is developed in a broader communication ecosystem, and explained that the contents concern the organizational, media and community spheres.

By the way, the director of the Adelante newspaper, the first media outlet created in Cuba after the triumph of the Revolution and close to its 65th anniversary, recommended that the entire society delve into this legal instrument, widely debated and founded, which, in her opinion, judgment, appears as one of the merits of the provision that results in the depth with which the topics presented therein are treated.

Saladrigas González explained that, with regard to journalists, the duties that the union has had since the beginning of the profession are recorded, such as reporting with immediacy and adherence to the truth, observing the rules of verification and contrasting of information, among others; At the same time, he believed that it is a document that reinforces the rights of workers linked to Communication and the population in general.

In her opinion, issues stand out such as the timely, transparent and truthful response of sources to requests for information from journalists and directors of media organizations; in addition to the responsibility of media directors with compliance with the editorial policy and with the management of the priorities of said policy thanks to the participation of their professionals and audiences.

The Social Communication Law, whose entry into force as established in the ninth transitional provision of the text will be 120 days after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cuba, reinforces the strategic nature of these processes, defined as one of the three pillars of Government management on the Island.

Systematically, the UPEC in Camagüey promotes spaces for improvement like this one, in which on previous occasions conferences and discussions have been given on various topics such as artificial intelligence and banking in the Greater Antilles.
