Jamaica resumes eye care plan with support from Cuba

Havana, Nov 27.- Some 12,000 Jamaican patients will be able to receive ophthalmological care from Cuban professionals, thanks to the resumption of a medical program between both countries.

After a pause in this plan due to the COVID-19 pandemic, specialists from Cuba are already working at the Kingston Public Hospital, reported the Jamaican government agency JIS.

According to the office, nine specialists from the largest of the Antilles make up the first team to arrive in Kingston (the capital of Jamaica), and another group is expected to arrive this month.

The most common conditions in patients waiting after resumption are cataracts and diabetic retinopathy, and a limited number of people are awaiting surgeries for Pterygium, JIS said.

It also specified that before the pause in the program, more than six thousand people had benefited from the care of the Cuban medical team.

According to the Jamaican agency, in 2019 alone, more than 1,500 surgical procedures were performed to treat cataracts, 304 for Pterygium, and 905 laser surgeries for diabetic retinopathy. (ACN) (Photo: PL)
