Cuba reiterates its policy of zero tolerance with drug trafficking

Havana, Nov 28.- The digital site of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) reported this Tuesday that as a result of the work carried out by the bodies that make up the MININT Ministerial Confrontation System, an operation was carried out against a group of citizens whom They were charged with participating in the commission of a crime related to the trafficking of illicit drugs and other substances with similar effects.

On this occasion, the note states, they used as their modus operandi the shipment of packages through agencies based in the United States (USA) that inside, and masked in full seasoning knobs, contained drugs of the synthetic cannabinoid type.

First Lieutenant Liznelis Peña Fuentes, Criminal Investigator, explained that within the framework of the investigative process, four people were detained, who were charged with the procedural guarantees corresponding to each of them and from which the investigative actions were derived.

It was possible to determine and identify that the source of supply in the United States were Cuban citizens who had their support base in the national territory, who were detained and included in the process.

In addition, the parcel sent had to be received and subsequently distributed by authorized persons.

People should know that by offering their data to receive package shipments, whether or not they receive remuneration, whether or not they know their content, they face consequences from a criminal point of view, explained Peña Fuentes.

The note adds that this has not been the only occasion in which this type of drug was tried to be introduced.

Lieutenant Colonel Abrahan Estonelle Ríos, officer of the Technical Department of Investigations, explained that the introduction of the synthetic cannabinoid into the national territory constitutes a challenge for the combating bodies, based on the various forms of masking used by crime and the means to introduce this drug into the national territory.

At the same time, it constitutes a complexity for forensic science in terms of determining the different types of synthetic cannabinoids that are introduced into the country.

Cuba maintains a policy of zero tolerance for drugs and as part of this it develops preventive and rehabilitation programs for dependent users.

Likewise, Lieutenant Colonel Abrahan Estonelle made reference to the various types of synthetic cannabinoids that have been identified in the country.

Consumers often have no idea what type of cannabinoid they are consuming. Added to that is the fact that drug traffickers mix them with other types of substances, which can even be more harmful to human health, and this results in greater harm for consumers, he stated.

In this case and in other investigations carried out by the Specialized Anti-Drug Confrontation Body, the interrelation that exists between criminal chains is demonstrated, from the organizer abroad to the support bases in the national territory, and sometimes this web spider also includes consumers, who are the most affected.

Scientific research that has been carried out has shown that synthetic cannabinoids cause even more dangerous and harmful effects than marijuana. (Text: ACN) (Photo: Taken from the MININT website)
