Finalists for the Silvestre de Balboa City Award announced in Camagüey



Camagüey, 1st. Feb.- Some sixty works by Cuban and foreign authors were received after the call for the Silvestre de Balboa City Award 2024, organized by the Enrique José Varona Provincial Center for Books and Literature (CPLL in Spanish).

Maykel Sardaña Pérez, director of Ácana Publishing House, commented that it was well received by authors from different latitudes, interested in dialogue from their proposals with the readers of the land considered the cradle of literature in the largest of the Antilles.

After the deliberation of the jury, which included the renowned writers Roberto Méndez, Jesús David Curbelo and Carlos Alberto Esquivel, four finalists were determined in each category.

On the national side are Milho Montenegro (Low Blows), Noel Pérez García (Doors Inside), Ernesto Pérez Castillo (The Cold of the Last Summer) and Julio Ramón Pita (Visitor of the Reef); In the foreign section there are Eduardo Verdejo Ahumada (Argentina), Ninah Basich (Mexico), Rubén Martín Camenforte (Spain) and Jaime Andrés Ballesteros Aguirre (Colombia).

The winners in each category will be announced on February 7 as part of the activities carried out by the CPLL during the Camagüey Culture Week; The award consists of the publication of the text by Editorial Ácana and a prize of 40 thousand pesos

“We want several of the finalists to join us in the celebrations for the 510th anniversary of the founding of the town of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, said Yoanis Soriano Cabrera, head of the Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda Promotion Center, so that they can interact with the public, learn about the local future and the cultural wealth that characterizes the region.”
