United Nations describes blockade of Cuba as a serious violation of human rights

Havana, April 2.- Experts from the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN) described the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba as a violation of International Law and the human rights of the people of the largest of the Antilles.

As highlighted today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) of Cuba on its website, in an unprecedented communication, the Special Rapporteurs on the Right to Food, the Right to Development, Extreme Poverty and the Negative Impact of Coercive Measures Unilateral in the enjoyment of Human Rights, they assessed this unilateral US policy as serious, including the principle of non-intervention in internal affairs, the sovereign equality of States and the obligation to resolve disputes by peaceful means.

The document, sent in January to the Government of the United States (USA) by UN experts, is made public after 60 days of the privacy period that corresponds to this type of communications, the Foreign Ministry added.

He said that the letter states that the unilateral coercive measures applied by the US against Cuba constitute serious violations of the human rights of the Cuban population, including their right to life, food, and the highest possible level of health, to live without poverty, without discrimination and the right of the Caribbean nation to its development.

The message emphasizes the serious consequences that arise from the restriction of Cuba's access to financing for agriculture and rural development programs, and for the rehabilitation and modernization of agricultural equipment and infrastructure, Minrex added.

Experts highlight that the increase in import transportation costs and the cancellation of maritime freight contracts, due to the pursuit of the blockade, has even made it difficult to implement projects from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The Foreign Ministry indicated that the joint communication urges the US Government, among other things, to report on the measures it is taking to guarantee that International Law and the rights of the Cuban people are not continued to be violated as a consequence of the unilateral sanctions.

So far Washington has not responded to the questions received from the Human Rights Council, the Minrex text states. (ACN) (Photo: PL)
