Camagüey, Aug 4.- With the most outstanding throw of his career, the young javelinist from Camagüey Guillermo Varona González managed to place Cuba on the top of the podium at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Competitor in the F46 category - affected by an upper limb -, he had already been crowned this year at the Kobe 2024 World Para Athletics Championships, with the personal best of 65.16 meters that he boasted until today.
On this occasion, Varona led the competition from the first throw with 63.63 meters, which made clear her good competitive condition. His second attempt seemed destined to fail due to lack of concentration, and although he had only 37 seconds to return to the starting point, center himself and throw again, he reached the shot of 66.14 with which he would win and which not only surpassed his own history, but also sets a new record for the area.
The subsequent shots were more discreet: 64.47 on the third attempt, 62.4 on the fourth and foul on the fifth. Thus he remained undefeated throughout all the rounds, escorted to the close by the Indians Ajeet Singh Yadav (silver with 65.62 m) and Sundar Singh Gurjar (bronze with 64.96 m).
Although Guillermo Varona had had a great season, he was not one of the most mentioned in the Cuban gold aspirations, so his victory represented a pleasant surprise and the brilliant closing of a day with titles from the long jumper Robiel Yankiel Sol and the runner Omara Durand in the 400 meter dash.
In Tokyo 2020, the sportsman had thrown the dart up to 63.30 m and was on the verge of the podium, in fourth place among the contenders. (Text and photo: Adelante Digital)
