Asunción, August 19 - Long jumper Rosmaiby Quesada secured Cuba’s third medal on the opening day of Athletics at the 2025 Pan American Junior Games in Asunción, with a jump of 6.35 meters, earning her a silver medal.
Quesada, hailing from the province of Cienfuegos, fell short by 42 centimeters of surpassing the gold medalist, Colombia’s Natalia Linares, who soared to 6.92 meters, setting a new historic record at the Pan American Junior Games of the Americas.
The 19-year-old Cuban, who has a personal best of 6.77 meters, recorded the following series of jumps: 5.72 / 5.94 / 6.35 / 6.07 / 3.80 and 6.16, according to the official Games website.
Meanwhile, the favorite Linares made her bid for the title with her first jump, landing at 6.66 meters and then following up with attempts of 6.55; 6.66; 6.77; 6.56; and finishing with 6.92 meters for a personal record, concluding a stellar night at the Athletics Stadium of the Olympic Park in Paraguay.
Completing the podium was Trinidad’s Janae de Gannes, who achieved a best jump of 6.33 meters.
On this day, the Cuban delegation had also collected two medals at the start of the athletics events, with silver and bronze medals in javelin from Leykel Cabrera and Claudia Guerrero, respectively. (Text and Photo: Cubasí)
