Cuba for peace and sustainable development in General Debate

Havana, Sep 28.- The Foreign Affairs Minister of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez, will raise his voice today in favor of peace, multilateralism and sustainable development from the podium of the United Nations General Assembly.

The head will speak before the forum of 193 members on the fifth day of the General Debate and after demanding greater political will to address the structural and moral failures of the international system that prevent progress towards a just future.

“The people need less interference and more solidarity; less unequal exchange and more equity; less politicization and double standards and more dialogue, cooperation and respect for their inalienable right to choose their political, economic, social and cultural system,” he said at the beginning of the week at the Summit of the Future.

As part of his agenda this week, Rodríguez spoke with the Vietnamese president, To Lam; and the foreign ministers of Russia, Sergei Lavrov; from South Africa, Ronald Lamola; and the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In parallel, he also held meetings with senior representatives from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Mexico, Vietnam, the European Union, Namibia, Senegal, Angola, Latvia, Kenya, Uzbekistan, the Vatican and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

His program also included conversations with Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and with the organization's representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Ángel Moratinos.

In addition, he reaffirmed Cuba's commitment to Palestine in a meeting organized by the Non-Aligned Movement or the Meeting of the Group of Friends of the United Nations Charter.

Likewise, he advocated for relations of respect and equality between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and China as well as exploring new opportunities between the bloc and the African Union.

During an open ministerial meeting convened by the Brazilian presidency of the G20, the head demanded an urgent, deep and whole reform, with open discussions in exchange settings such as the United Nations.

“The current international economic order is hostage to unilateral policies and lists, such as the illegal and criminal blockade of the United States against Cuba and the fraudulent inclusion of our country on the list of States supposedly sponsoring terrorism,” he denounced.

This hostile policy also focused a pleasant conversation with North American legal representatives on the implications of the Helms-Burton law against Cuba, an instrument with serious implications for international law. (Text and photo: PL)
