Instagram will use AI to detect underage users who lie about their age

USA, Nov 8. - In order to protect minors from content potentially harmful to their mental health on Instagram, the social network's parent company, Meta, will use artificial intelligence (AI) to identify users who lied about their age in their account settings.

The new tool — called 'Adult classifier'— will analyze the information published in the user's profile, their list of followers, the content that interests them, as well as the birthday greetings made by their contacts to determine your true age.

After that, the 'software' will decide in which age group the user will be included: over or under 18 years of age, Bloomberg reports a statement from the director of product management for youth and social impact at Meta, Allison Hartnett. Those suspected of being under 18 according to the AI ??analysis will automatically be included in the teen account group, regardless of the age they claim to be on their profile.

In addition, their accounts will automatically have stricter default privacy settings, introduced by the social network this September and "designed to address parents' biggest concerns, such as who their children talk to online, the content they come or if they invest their time well.

These protections are automatically enabled for teens under 16, and teens can adjust settings to be less strict only with parental permission. At the same time, users who are 16 or 17 years old will be able to change more restrictive privacy settings on their own, but in this case parents can have more control over their children's experiences by turning on parental supervision.
