Moscow, 28 Nov. - The escalation of the conflict in Ukraine would be out of control if the West transferred nuclear weapons to Kiev, warned today the Russian deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov.
I do not know what kind of people are speaking out in this regard. I know that there have been repeated statements in this regard by responsible or, to be exact, irresponsible officials in kyiv, the deputy minister said in statements to the Sputnik news agency.
Riabkov pointed out that the transfer of nuclear weapons to Ukraine, in addition to destroying the entire system of non-proliferation and arms control that persists despite the destructive policy of the United States, would represent a major step towards a completely uncontrolled expansion of the conflict.
The New York Times previously reported that some European and American officials are suggesting that Ukraine should be equipped with nuclear weapons, which it renounced in the early 1990s.
On November 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree approving the updated nuclear doctrine, which states, among other things, that a massive attack on the country, including cruise missiles and drones, could trigger a nuclear response.
According to Putin, the new wording of the doctrine considers as a joint attack on Russia the aggression by any non-nuclear country in which it participates or which is carried out with the support of a nuclear state.
In addition, Russia considers nuclear weapons as a deterrent and their use as an extreme measure, while the state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence is defensive in nature and is aimed at ensuring the protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. (Text and photo: PL)
