Camagüey, Dec. 23. - 183 years after his birth, the people of Camagüey fervently celebrated the memory of Ignacio Agramonte, a brave defender of the homeland and the ideals of independence.
In an emotional act of pilgrimage, Federico Hernández Hernández, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary in the province, led the march to the park that bears his name, where together with authorities and representatives of the people a floral offering was placed at the commemorative monument.
Historian José Fernando Crespo Baró highlighted the origins of El Mayor and how his formation influenced the construction of a thought of justice focused on the defense of the authentic.
In addition, he highlighted the relevance of the figure of Agramonte for the people of Camagüey, emphasizing his intrinsic connection with the city and his role in the social and cultural development of the region.
Later, the exhibition From the Plaza Mayor to the Ignacio Agramonte Park was inaugurated, an initiative of the Office of the Historian of the City of Camagüey (OHCC), aimed at publicizing and promoting the history surrounding the park, with the aim of creating civic awareness that prevents bad practices in which citizens incur today.
José Rodríguez Barreras, director of the OHCC, stressed the need to care for and preserve historical and heritage monuments, a task that requires the joint effort of everyone.
The equestrian statue, which is more than a hundred years old, was recently restored by the sculptor Raidel Ortega in collaboration with the Francisco Sánchez Betancourt School of Trades. Currently, work is being done on a general repair that will culminate with the lighting of the four palms that symbolize the martyrs of 1951.
