Washington, Jan. 6.- The United States Congress will hold a joint session today, in which it will recount and certify the Electoral College votes to certify the victory of Republican Donald Trump.
Vice President Kamala Harris, in her constitutional capacity as president of the Senate, will lead this session on Capitol Hill that will confirm Trump's victory and his return to the White House.
With this process, the 2024 electoral cycle will officially close and it is expected that, unlike four years ago, everything will pass peacefully this Monday.
However, the country's capital announced a reinforcement of its security, especially after an attack occurred in the early hours of January 1 in New Orleans during the celebrations for the arrival of 2025 and hours later, on the day itself, of the explosion of A Tesla Cybertruck in front of the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Washington, DC, is also preparing surveillance because not only Trump's certification but also two other high-profile events will coincide here in brief periods: the state funeral for the 39th President, James Carter, between Tuesday and Thursday, and the inauguration of inauguration of the 47th President, on January 20.
A four-year period ago, hundreds of Trump supporters violently broke into the Capitol to prevent the validation of Joe Biden's electoral victory in November 2020.
January 6, 2021 was inscribed in the pages of United States history as the day of the worst attack on the heart of democracy in this country. The violence left five dead and more than 140 police officers injured.
Trump won the elections on November 5 with 312 Electoral College votes, compared to the 224 achieved by his Democratic rival, outgoing Vice President Harris. (Text and photo: PL)
