Sheinbaum: Mexican troops on the northern border strengthen security

Mexico City, Feb 4.- The troops that began to be sent to the northern border to reinforce the fight against fentanyl trafficking also strengthen security in that area, without neglecting that of the rest of Mexico, said President Claudia Sheinbaum today.

“Yes, they have already begun to be sent,” said the dignitary in response to a question about one of the agreements reached yesterday with the president of the United States, Donald Trump, which involves the transfer of 10 thousand elements to that area.

“The plan was evidently made by the general secretary (of Defense, Ricardo Trevilla) with his team. In some areas where there are elements of the National Guard that do not have so many security problems in some regions, they are sent to the northern border,” she explained.

She assured that it is a deployment that does not leave the rest of the country without security, since there are a total of 120 thousand members of that body.

“Let them know that it is not that we are leaving the states of the republic uncovered, far from it, but rather a reorientation of the forces,” said the head of the Executive, who referred to another advantage of sending these elements, since security on the northern border will also be strengthened.

“So the troops that go there not only have the objective of monitoring customs so that fentanyl does not pass through, or the area, but they will also help us strengthen security,” she said.

Among the agreements reached yesterday with Trump were also the pause for a month in the application of the tariffs that the administration of the northern country would have imposed from today, as well as Washington's commitment to work to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.

Teams from both parties also began to work in two areas: security and trade. (Text and Photo: PL)
