Agroecological potato culture in Camaguey: a step towards sustainability

Camaguey, Feb 6th.- In order to promote self-sufficiency at the local and provincial levels, significant advances are made in the cultivation of agroecological potato in four municipalities of Camaguey during the current cold planting campaign.

María Magdalena Artuñedo Pérez, Head of the Department of Scientific Development and Environment of the Provincial Delegation of Agriculture, stressed that this initiative seeks to encourage innovation and continuous experimentation by producers on their farms.

She pointed out that the plantation of the tuber is executed on agricultural lands of Guáimaro, Santa Cruz del Sur, Minas and Vertientes.

One of the most successful experiences has been recorded on the farm of the Vertientes-born farmer Omar Quiñones, where a hectare was planted for the self-sufficiency of the community, as well as social consumption and other sectors of society.

Artuñedo Pérez also mentioned the participation of the Agroindustrial Company of Granos Ruta Invasora that has incorporated a hectare into this initiative and added that experience has allowed implementing good practices that contribute to the improvement of soils and the environment.

In addition, traditional potato is being cultivated with technology in the Agricultural Company Citrícos located in the municipality of Sierra de Cubitas, where 57 hectares have been allocated for this production.

The planting of agroecological potatoes in the Agramonte’s region began during the cold campaign 2022-2023 as part of the Capacity Building Project to Promote Agroecology in Family Farms of Cuba, promoted by the Hatuey Indio Hatuey de Matanzas Experimental Grass and Forage Station.
