Minas, Camaguey, Feb 8th. - The start of the harvest of agroecological potato in the municipality of Minas marks a significant milestone in sustainable agricultural development. This not only represents an opportunity to improve local production, but also reflects a commitment to environmental practices and promote biodiversity.
Omar Fernández Adam, an experienced producer of the Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS) May 17, says that thanks to assistance in agroecological practices, farmers have been able to implement techniques that optimize the use of natural resources, improving soil quality and increasing the resistance of crops to pests and diseases. However, he adds that this harvest has not been fruitful in this period due to several factors, both objective and subjective, highlighting the climatic characteristics that did not support the cultivation process since its inception.
The preparation of land through animal traction has been fundamental in this context. This traditional method, which uses animals such as horses and oxen, allows the earth to be worked out more efficiently and less invasively than mechanized methods. This practice not only reduces soil compaction, but also favors the incorporation of organic matter, which in turn improves the fertility of the terrain.
The process of collecting agroecological potato on the popular Senate council began in late January. Although not all expectations are met, an organized and phased sale is planned in prioritized education and health centres, as well as in the population, depending on the collection and the places selected for marketing.
