Havana, Feb 20th. - The National Union of Jurists of Cuba annually awards the National Prize of Law "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes," with the aim of recognizing the life and work of jurists who have maintained an outstanding professional career, in teaching, research or the exercise of the profession. This Prize was first instituted in May 2005 at the VI Organizing Congress.
The Jury, appointed by the Board of Directors of the National Union of Jurists of Cuba, agreed to award the National Award for 2024 to Dr. C. Leonardo Bernardino Pérez Gallardo, a relevant jurist, who has dedicated his life to the development of Legal Sciences.
The solemn ceremony where the Prize will be formally and publicly presented will be held in the Assembly Hall of the University of Havana, on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 10:00 am, with the presence of distinguished personalities of Cuban law and intellectuality.
The Dr. Leonardo Bernardino Pérez Gallardo is a graduate with honors of the Faculty of Law of the University of Havana in 1989 has served as a professor of the same faculty for more than three decades. It holds the teaching category of Full Professor. He holds a master's degree in Private Law from the University of Valencia, and a specialist in Civil Law and Notarial Law from the University of Havana. Doctor of legal sciences from the University since 2002. A member of the Directorate of Civil Records and Notaries of the Ministry of Justice from 2001 to the present.
In the National Union of Jurists of Cuba, since 2018 he has presided over the Cuban Society of Civil and Family Law; he has been vice president of the Cuban Notary Society since 2007; he has presided over the Editorial Board of the Cuban Law Journal since 2008 and has been a member of the National Board of Directors since 2022.
He has been an academic at the Cuban Academy of Sciences since 2024 and an honorary academic of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Spain since 2006.
He was a member of the drafting committee of the Cuban Families Code, approved in referendum in 2022. In addition, it has been an integral part of the teams that have developed many other far-reaching legal norms for the country, such as the Decree-Law on Economic Procurement, the Notary Act and the Public Health Act, among others. At the regional level, he has membership in the Group for the Harmonization of Law in Latin America (GADAL).
It has more than five hundred publications between monographic works, articles published in specialized journals and collective works. He has been a speaker and lecturer in more than three hundred events and days held; as well as a guest professor and lecturer on more than two hundred occasions by multiple universities and academies in several American, European and Asian nations.
It accumulates more than a hundred prizes and recognitions of a teaching or scientific, trade union and political nature. Among the most relevant are three awards or recognitions of the Cuban Academy of Sciences; two special awards from the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment; the Distinction for Cuban Education awarded by the Ministry of Higher Education; the José Tey Medal awarded by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba; and the orders Frank Country of First Degree and Carlos J. Finlay.
His academic, pedagogical, intellectual and research solvency; his vocation to the formation of new generations of jurists and researchers and also his very high degree of honesty, dedication and altruism, make it possible to recognize in Dr. C. Leonardo Bernardino Pérez Gallardo is a prominent performance in the practice and development of law in Cuba. (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
