The CUBATRABAJA Symposium concludes in Havana

Havana, June 25 – The CUBATRABAJA Symposium concludes today at the Havana Convention Palace after an opening day in which participants advocated for ensuring the professionalization and institutionalization of the social worker.

The proposal considers that the performance of social welfare managers is key to implementing prevention projects and programmes within communities and families.

During the opening day of the event, the first of its kind in Cuba, topics related to the promotion and exchange of knowledge and experiences were discussed, starting from science and innovation to seek answers to new social and labor realities.

At the keynote lecture which launched the scientific programme, the island’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Marta Elena Feitó, stressed that there must be a correspondence between employment and economic development.

In this relationship, she emphasized, it is necessary to apply all available scientific and technical advances, in addition to creating spaces for constant creation, because this will lead to fair and equitable policies.

Other topics discussed included equity and social justice, assistance to people in vulnerable situations, care for children, adolescences, and youth, and human capital management.

Under the motto For decent work and sustainable social development, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS, for its acronym in Spanish), the Center for Labor Studies and the Social Labor Observatory of Cuba organize the meeting.

The symposium is attended by delegates selected from across the country, including 10 university students, according to Maybely Véliz, Director General of Development at the MTSS.

Attendees include students, academics, researchers, social workers, economic actors, and officials from various agencies.

The results and proposals will be taken into account to improve work and policies for the benefit of the population, Véliz announced. (Text and photo: PL)
