Camagüey, Mar 11th. - The trade union movement in Camagüey gets ready to pay an emotional tribute to Lázaro Peña, an icon of trade unionism in Cuba, on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of his physical departure. This commemoration will not only remember its legacy, but will also be a celebration of the achievements achieved by Cuban workers over the years.
The activities will include talks, exhibitions and cultural events that will highlight the life and work of this outstanding leader, in each labor group of the province will resonate the echoes of their voice and their inheritance of unity and solidarity.
In the tobacco factory the credit was forged as a revolutionary, his work in the middle of the aroma of tobacco and the sound of the machines made him a reference of struggle and change for his people.
Known as the captain of the working class, he participated in the 1933 strike, an event that led to the dismissal of the Government of Gerardo Machado. In 1939 he assumed the position of Secretary General of the Central of Workers of Cuba, a position he maintained until 1947. During his term he led a significant mobilization in response to Carlos Prío's campaign, whose objective was to weaken the labor movement in the country.
Thanks to his tireless effort and progressive vision, Lázaro Peña faced numerous challenges and reprisals for his activism, however, his determination remained firm leaving an indelible mark on the history of the largest of the Antilles.
