Japanese woman, barber, Guinness, Tokyo, trade

108-year-old Japanese woman is the oldest barber in the world

Tokyo, Mar 17th. - She is the oldest barber in the world: she is 108 years old, but the thin white-haired Japanese woman doesn't plan to retire any time soon.

Shitsui Hakoishi says the formal recognition, given this week by Guinness World Records, brought him a lot of joy, in addition to the satisfaction of his clients, of course.

The woman received an official certificate from the international franchise on Wednesday. Guinness World Records has a separate category for male barbers, but the man who was certified at 107 in 2018, American Anthony Mancinelli, died in the meantime, leaving Hakoishi as the only holder of the record.

Her career has spanned nine decades and she says she owes everything to her clients.

"I have only been able to get here thanks to my clients," Hakoishi said at a televised press conference on Wednesday from a gym in Nakagawa, her hometown in Tochigi Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo. I am overwhelmed and full of joy.

Born on November 10, 1916, to a family of farmers in Nakagawa, Hakoishi decided to become a barber at the age of 14 and moved to Tokyo, where she perfected her job first as an apprentice. (Source: AP)
