United States, Donald Trump, executive order, Department of Education (ED), progressive ideology

Trump goes after the US Department of Education

Washington, March 20th. - U.S. President Donald Trump plans to sign a new executive order today, this time to shut down the Department of Education (ED), which he calls wasteful and tainted by progressive ideology.

Since his election campaign, Trump has had his eye on the ED, which was created in 1979. Dismantling it won't be easy without an act of Congress, although the process to eliminate it is already underway through layoffs and program cuts.

The Department is planning to reduce its workforce by half, as well as the Office of Civil Rights and the Institute of Education Sciences, which collects data on the nation's academic progress.

The order would direct ED Secretary Linda McMahon to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure and return educational authority to the states.

Nearly five years ago, in his first term, Trump tried to cut the Department of Education's budget, but Congress blocked those attempts.

The then president sought a $5.6 billion cut and the elimination of 29 programs, such as those linked to after-school and summer programs for children in vulnerable situations.

However, now, Trump is not only seeking to reduce the ED, but his goal is to eliminate it, something that would mean leaving many children behind in an education system that, in the opinion of many, is unequal.

Trump's goal is to shut down the ED and return it to the states, where it belongs. He claims it's a breeding ground for radicals, fanatics, and Marxists. (Text and photo: PL)
