National Electoral Council led and oversaw more than 990 trials in 2024


Havana, Mar 25th. - The work carried out by the National Electoral Council (CEN) last year, and the remainder of the progress of progress in the improvement of the body, were today the main topics addressed by its members at the annual balance meeting, chaired by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.

Alina Balseiro Gutiérrez, president of the CEN, stressed that, during the period, the Council organized, directed and supervised the development of 999 processes to fill the vacancies of delegates to the municipal assemblies of the People's Power, which represents 43.52 per cent of the total vacancies declared in the current term.

She also pointed out that nine processes were also carried out to fill vacancies for deputies to the National Assembly of People’s Power, as well as four actions to fill vacancies on the Council of State and the Comptroller General of the Republic.

Balseiro Gutiérrez specified that the main dissatisfaction in 2024 was represented by the average attendance of 58.22% to the votes concluded at the municipal level, with 31 constituencies in the country that did not reach 30 % participation.

The highest representative of the electoral authority in Cuba referred to the completion of the approved staff of cadres, which is covered by 98.06 %, with a wide participation of women among its ranks, 62.3 per cent, while young people under 40 years of age represent 14.3 per cent.

Among the main points on which to continue to insist, she identified the strengthening and revitalization of the structures, with the decisive competition of volunteering that accompanies each process, gaining in visibility and positioning the tasks of the body in defense of socialist legality and the Law 127 Electoral Law, as well as the incorporation of novel techniques such as artificial intelligence in the proceedings.

The CEN arose after the proclamation of the Constitution of the Republic of 2019, as the fundamental mission of the State body that has as its fundamental mission to organize, direct and supervise the elections, popular consultations, plebiscites and referendums that are convened, in addition to processing and responding to the demands that are established in electoral matters.
