Cuba and Russia strengthen scientific collaboration in astronomy

Havana, Mar 29th. - The Cuban-Russian Astronomical Observatory will travel in the coming months through a new stage of development, which includes the strengthening of its instrumental base, the conduct of astrocyte research and the search for new points for spatial observation, in the largest of the Antilles.

This was followed during the visit to the Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy (Iga), of the Environment Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, by Professor Dr. Mikhail E. Sachkov, director of the Institute of Astronomy at the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Dr. Evgueny Kopylov, deputy scientific director.

According to Granma, engineer Omar Pons Rodríguez, vice director of Technical Development of the Iga, the meeting reviewed the state of scientific collaboration between the two institutions and the results achieved since the opening of the Observatory, a joint project that has become an efficient network for the detection and monitoring of space objects.

Pons Rodriguez specified that the assembly, installation and commissioning of cameras for meteorites are planned, in two points of the territory of Cuba, which will allow to have a surveillance system focused on the studies of the dangers of impact of these cosmic bodies.

They also dealt with issues related to the maintenance and technical improvements of the 20 centimetre-diameter Russian telescope, installed at the IGA, and the preparation of Cuban specialists in solar physics and about the dangers of impact of asteroids and comets, he said.

Inaugurated at the Iga headquarters in January 2022, the Cuban-Russian Astronomical Observatory also contributes to the creation of a database of astronomical observations, of great value for the exchange of information with other counterparts. (Digital Grammy) (Photo: Internet taken)
