Camagüey, April 10th. - The Carlos J. Finlay University of Medical Sciences of Camagüey introduced Lester Marrero Molina as its new rector, in a ceremony that acknowledged the work of Tamara Chaos, who led the institution since 2020.
Tamara Chaos, outgoing rector, emotionally expressed her gratitude toward her alma mater, where she culminated a 15-year journey of professional and personal growth. "In February 2020, I assumed a great responsibility, and today I leave a strengthened institution," she stated. She highlighted the challenges faced, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where the university was a setting for "dedication, leadership, and resilience."
She acknowledged the key role played by students and the FEU in the achievements made under his administration. Among the milestones reached, he highlighted the awarding of the Carlos J. Finlay Order in 2022, granted by Presidential Decree, as well as the accreditation of all programs at the Faculty of Dentistry by the National Accreditation Board.
Chaos mentioned infrastructure advances, such as the restoration of laboratories, student residences, sports halls, and the creation of a literary café and a Children's Playhouse. "We are working in a complex context, but we have successfully hosted scientific events with government support," she added.
The former rector highlighted the training of 26 PhDs in Science and the strengthening of the teaching staff. "It was a team that embraced defeats, joys, and mistakes, always with the goal of developing more humanistic professionals."
Lester Marrero Molina, the new rector, took office with the commitment to foster a "stage of growth" and harness the potential of students and faculty. "This university has more than 45 years of achievements and will continue to be a transformative center," he stated.
Marrero emphasized the importance of a modern university, capable of providing scientific solutions to social problems. "Our challenge is to maintain the example of excellence and commitment in teaching and research," he noted.
Deputy Minister of Public Health Reynol García highlighted Chaos's work and supported the new leadership. "This institution is a benchmark in Cuban medical training, and we are confident it will continue to grow," he said.
