Guatemala City, April 18 – The Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (URNG, for its acronym in Spanish) party welcomed the proclamation of the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution, recognizing the profound significance of this month for the island and the world today.
Through a statement, the political force highlighted that on April 1, 1961, the largest island in the Caribbean began the literacy campaign, with which it managed to eradicate illiteracy, as a first great victory.
It described the 16th as glorious, when the historical leader, Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro, proclaimed the socialist character and - it added - between the 17th and 19th the invasion of Playa Girón (Bay of Pigs) took place.
It recalled that then counterrevolutionary forces, trained in this country by the United States government, tried to invade Cuba, but suffered the first major defeat on the continent, in less than 72 hours.
The National Revolutionary Militias played a crucial role in the failure of that action, demonstrating the massive support of the people for their Revolution and in its defense.
The URNG highlighted Cuba's socialist achievements, due to the profound impact it has had on the development of its society, economy and politics. It celebrated this decreed character and fully trusted in its deepening.
Without Revolution and without Socialism, the Antillean nation would not have achieved the reduction of poverty and social inequality, it considered in the text. It achieved equitable access to housing, food, employment, it expanded. One of the highest literacy rates in the world; one of the best healthcare systems in Latin America, with universal and free access, it stated.
The lowest infant mortality rate among our countries; the development of the biotechnology industry with its own vaccines, among many other achievements, stated the URNG, a group of the historical left of this country.
Despite the economic blockade imposed by imperialism, Cuba has never renounced its principles of justice for its people and the world, it emphasized.
Its internationalist and humanist example is demonstrated daily with the presence of Medical Brigades spread across all continents, it emphasized.
It repudiated the slander spread by operators and lackeys of North American imperialism, against the work promoted by said internationalist contingents.
It expressed eternal recognition for this profound humanitarian and highly professional work. Without them, thousands of people in Guatemala would never have received medical care, it asserted.
He demanded that the United States government respect the sovereignty and self-determination of the Cuban people; to eliminate, once and for all, the genocidal blockade against Cuba and definitively remove it from the list of sponsors of terrorism. (Text and photo: PL)
