Paraguay recovers valuable five-century-old manuscript

Asunción, April 26. - The government of Paraguay announced the recovery of an original manuscript from 1539, stolen more than 100 years ago, after being identified at an auction in the United States.

The discovery of the manuscript, part of the collection of the National Archive of Paraguay, occurred after an anonymous complaint that warned about its sale on a US platform.

The manuscript, which is in the custody of the Paraguayan Consulate in New York, was recovered in early April, and its return to the country is being arranged through coordination between the Attorney General's Office and the Foreign Ministry.

The document, dated 1598, was written and signed by Hernando Arias de Saavedra, the first Creole ruler in the viceroyalties of America, consists of 13 pages and contains regulations that directly impacted the life of the indigenous population during the colony.

The SNC confirmed that this action strengthens the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property and sets a precedent in the recovery of Paraguay's historical heritage, highlighting the importance of inter-institutional and international cooperation.

The entity recognized the management and support of the National Committee to Fight Illicit Trafficking in Cultural Property, the Foreign Ministry, and the Public Ministry, among other institutions. (Text and Photo: PL)
