Cuba commemorates the 70th anniversary of Fidel Castro's release

Isla de la Juventud, May 15.- The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, led the central national ceremony here for the 70th anniversary of the release of the historical leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro (1926-2016) and other young assailants at the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks.

In the commemoration of the anniversary, along with some six thousand residents of this Special Municipality, the Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party of Cuba, Roberto Morales, and the commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés and the main authorities of the territory were also present.

The liberation of the National Prison for Men on the Isle of Pines, known as the Model Prison, was made possible thanks to a thriving pro-amnesty movement that gained strength throughout the country and became the largest mobilization in favor of that cause carried out to date.

The young revolutionaries were released from the prison on the Isle of Pines—now Isla de la Juventud—on May 15, 1955, after an unjust imprisonment and a rigged trial for their participation in the armed actions of July 26, 1953.

On May 16, Fidel Castro, after holding a press conference at the Isle of Pines Hotel, gave journalists the Manifesto to the People of Cuba, in which he reaffirmed his intention to continue, after his release, the struggle without rest or fun, without respite, until Cuba's freedom is achieved.

The country stands up formidable against those who mistreat it, a new faith is seen emerging, an unusual awakening in the national conscience. Trying to drown it is provoking an unprecedented catastrophe whose disastrous results will fall on the heads of the guilty, he pointed out.

Nearly two months later, Fidel Castro departed for Mexico, where he prepared the Granma yacht expedition, which landed in eastern Cuba to begin the guerrilla struggle in the Sierra Maestra, which culminated in the victory of the rebel forces on January 1, 1959. (Text and photo: PL)
