Ramallah, May 16 – The Palestinian Journalists' Union today called on the world to protect communicators in the occupied territories amid ongoing attacks, murders, and persecution by the Israeli military and police.
In a statement, the union's Freedoms Committee highlighted that, in April, the troops of that country committed more than 80 crimes against the sector, including three murders in the Gaza Strip.
The institution reported that during that month, four attacks against press equipment were recorded, three homes belonging to journalists' families were destroyed, four were arrested, and five were physically assaulted.
It indicated that, since the beginning of the aggression against Gaza in October 2023, more than 200 Palestinian communicators have been killed by Israel.
Recently, the Palestinian Prisoners' Club revealed that 49 communicators remain imprisoned in prisons of that country.
They are subjected to all the systematic crimes that face the rest of the Palestinian detainees, including starvation, lack of medical care, torture and numerous forms of abuse, he pointed out.
In 2024, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization awarded the Guillermo Cano Prize to Palestinian journalists covering the conflict, in recognition of their work. (Text and photo: PL)
